Resetting the Autonomic Nervous System

What Is Neural Therapy?

Neural therapy is a gentle injection-based treatment that aims to regulate the autonomic nervous system (ANS), the part of the nervous system that helps control pain, inflammation, circulation, digestion, and the body's stress response. Developed in Germany in the early 20th century, it targets "interference fields" such as scars, old injuries, or stressed tissues that may continue sending abnormal signals through the nervous system. By injecting small amounts of procaine into the skin or around targeted areas, neural therapy aims to quiet these signals and support healthier nervous system function.

Why the ANS Affects So Much More Than Pain

The autonomic nervous system influences far more than pain. It helps regulate blood vessels, digestion, circulation, immune activity, hormonal function, and tissue healing. When the ANS becomes dysregulated, symptoms may extend beyond pain and affect multiple body systems. For some patients, restoring autonomic balance becomes one important part of a comprehensive treatment plan.

Neuroplasticity: Why the Results Can Last

Your nervous system constantly adapts to the signals it receives, a process known as neuroplasticity. After injury or trauma, it can become locked into patterns of pain or chronic stress. Neural therapy may help interrupt these patterns, allowing the nervous system to establish healthier responses over time. This is one reason it often complements treatments such as acupuncture, physical therapy, counseling, and nutritional care.

What Does Treatment Feel Like?

Treatment involves small injections at carefully selected areas, such as scars, tender points, or other targeted tissues. Most patients experience a brief pinch or mild stinging sensation, sometimes followed by warmth, tingling, or a feeling of release. Some notice changes immediately, while others improve gradually over a series of treatments.

Not everyone is a candidate for neural therapy. During your consultation, we will determine whether neural therapy, perineural injection therapy (PIT), acupuncture, or another treatment approach is most appropriate for your condition.

When Neural Therapy May Be Helpful

Neural therapy may be appropriate for individuals experiencing:

  • Persistent muscle tension or pain that does not fully respond to stretching, massage, or other treatments
  • Feeling stuck in a chronic fight-or-flight state or difficulty relaxing
  • Ongoing symptoms following surgery or around a scar
  • Pain that has persisted despite physical therapy, medications, or other therapies
  • Physical symptoms that worsen during periods of stress, such as headaches, jaw tension, or digestive discomfort
  • Lingering symptoms following physical or emotional trauma

Not every condition is appropriate for neural therapy. During your consultation, a comprehensive evaluation will determine whether neural therapy, perineural injection therapy (PIT), acupuncture, or another treatment approach is the best fit for your individual needs.
